Building in the US is expensive, so many founders and small businesses look to India for developers. Done well, you get a solid product, often for well under local rates. Done badly, you get missed deadlines and code nobody can maintain. This guide shows the options, what they cost and how to protect yourself.
Three ways to hire developers in India
| Model | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Freelancer | One person found on a marketplace or by referral, usually paid hourly | Small fixes and short tasks with a clear brief |
| Dedicated developer | A full-time developer who works only on your product, billed monthly | Ongoing product work when you can manage the developer yourself |
| Development agency | A team (design, development, testing, project lead) on a fixed-price or milestone contract | Building a complete website, app or MVP with one accountable partner |
If you do not have a technical person in-house to write specs and review code, an agency is usually the safer choice: you get one owner for the result instead of managing individuals.
What a project typically costs
These are indicative prices for fixed-scope projects, the same ranges our quick estimate on the home page shows US visitors. They are a range, not a quote.
| Project | What it includes | Typical price (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| Landing page | One offer, design, build, contact form | $250 – $500 |
| Business website | 5–10 pages, design, build, SEO setup, launch | $500 – $1,200 |
| Online store | Catalogue, cart, checkout and payments | $1,200 – $2,500 |
| Mobile app | Android and iOS app, backend and store launch | $2,500 – $6,000 |
| Web app or SaaS | Logins, roles, dashboards and an admin panel | $2,500 – $6,000 |
Complex platforms such as marketplaces, delivery apps or fintech products cost more and are priced from a written feature list. Our app cost calculator gives a first estimate in a minute.
Time zones: make them work for you
India Standard Time is 9½ hours ahead of US Eastern in summer and 10½ hours ahead in winter, because India does not change its clocks. In practice:
- Schedule a short call in your morning, which is the Indian team's evening.
- Agree on written daily or twice-weekly updates.
- Use a shared board so you can see progress without waiting for a call.
Handled this way, the gap becomes an advantage: work moves forward while you sleep.
How to vet an Indian development partner
- Look at live work. Ask for links to sites and apps they built, not just screenshots.
- Ask for a written quote. It should list features, timeline, price and what is excluded.
- Check communication early. A clear, prompt reply to your first brief predicts how the project will go.
- Start small. A landing page or a two-week first milestone is a cheap way to test the relationship.
- Ask who does the work. Make sure it is not passed to unknown subcontractors.

Contracts, payment and code ownership
- Fixed price for a fixed scope works best for a first project. Read fixed price vs time and materials to choose the model.
- Milestone payments: for example, a deposit, then payments on design approval, a working build and launch.
- Code ownership: the contract should transfer the source code, designs and accounts to you, and the code should sit in a repository you control from day one.
- Support after launch: agree what is included and how changes are priced afterwards.
