PWA vs Native App: Which Is Right for Your Business?

Progressive web app or native mobile app? Compare cost, features, performance, discoverability and when each option makes sense for your business.

PWA vs Native App: Which Is Right for Your Business?
Quick answer

A progressive web app (PWA) is a website that behaves like an app and costs less because it uses one codebase and needs no app-store approval, while a native or cross-platform app can use device features more fully and appear in app stores. Choose a PWA for simple, content or form-based needs, and an app when you need deep device features or store presence.

Many businesses want “an app” but are not sure they need one in the app stores. A progressive web app (PWA) is a website that can be installed on a phone’s home screen, work with poor connectivity and feel like an app. A native (or cross-platform) app is installed from the Play Store or App Store and can use more of the phone’s features.

Which is better? It depends on what your users need to do.

The simple comparison

PWA Native / cross-platform app
Distribution A link; optional install from the browser Play Store / App Store
Approval needed None Store review
Development One web codebase Android + iOS (one codebase if cross-platform)
Typical cost Lower Higher
Device features Camera, location, push and more, with browser limits Full access (sensors, Bluetooth, background work)
Offline Basic to good, via caching Excellent
Discoverability Google search App-store search and Google
Updates Instant for everyone Users must update

Choose a PWA when…

  • Your app is mostly content, forms, catalogues or dashboards.
  • You want to reach users through Google search and links.
  • Your budget or timeline is tight.
  • You want instant updates without store delays.
  • Your users do not need advanced device features.

Examples: booking pages, internal tools, simple stores, event sites, field-staff forms.

Choose a native or cross-platform app when…

  • You need deep device features — Bluetooth, background location, advanced camera, biometrics, health-sensor data.
  • You want store presence and the trust and visibility that come with it.
  • You need smooth animations or heavy graphics.
  • Push notifications and offline behaviour are central to the product.
  • You plan to build a long-term consumer product with high engagement.

Examples: delivery and ride apps, fitness trackers, wallets, learning apps with downloads.

What about iPhones?

PWAs work on iPhones, and support has improved, including notifications for installed web apps. But some capabilities still differ from Android, so always test the features you depend on on both platforms before choosing.

The hybrid path many businesses take

You do not have to decide forever:

  1. Start with a fast website or PWA to validate demand cheaply.
  2. Add a mobile app when users ask for features a PWA cannot deliver.
  3. Reuse your back end and APIs for both.

If you do build an app, a cross-platform framework can keep cost down — see Flutter vs React Native and our app cost guide.

A quick decision guide

  1. Do you need Bluetooth, background tasks or heavy graphics? → App
  2. Do customers find you mainly through Google? → PWA / website
  3. Is budget the main constraint? → PWA first
  4. Is app-store presence important to your brand? → App

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can a PWA replace a mobile app?

For many simple use cases — catalogues, bookings, forms, dashboards — yes. For apps that rely on advanced device features or background tasks, a native or cross-platform app is usually better.

Do PWAs work on iPhones?

Yes, they can be added to the home screen and work offline to a degree, but iOS support for some capabilities has historically lagged Android, so test your must-have features.

Is a PWA cheaper than an app?

Usually, because you build and maintain one web codebase and avoid separate store releases.
