Paid ads stop the moment you stop paying; SEO keeps working. For an online store, ranking for the right searches can bring steady, high-intent visitors who are already looking to buy. Here is how to do it well.
1. Start with how shoppers search
Shoppers search at different stages:
| Stage | Example search | Page to target |
|---|---|---|
| Browsing | “cotton kurta for women” | Category page |
| Comparing | “best running shoes under 3000” | Guide or comparison page |
| Ready to buy | “brand model name price” | Product page |
List the terms for your products and group them by page: one main keyword idea per page, avoiding duplicate pages competing for the same search.
2. Build a clean site structure
- Keep it shallow: Home → Category → Product within about three clicks.
- Use logical categories and short, readable URLs, such as
/women/kurtas/. - Add breadcrumbs so visitors and search engines understand where they are.
- Link related products and categories to each other.
3. Write category pages that rank
Category pages often have the most search potential. Give each one:
- A clear, keyword-aware title and heading.
- A short helpful introduction (50–150 words) above or below products.
- Useful filters (size, price, colour) that do not create endless duplicate URLs.
- Links to popular products and subcategories.
4. Make every product page unique and helpful
- Unique title and description that include the product name and key detail.
- Original description: materials, size, use, care, what is in the box.
- Several high-quality photos with descriptive alt text.
- Price, availability and delivery information clearly shown.
- Reviews and questions from real customers.
- Clear call to action and easy returns information.
5. Add structured data
Mark up products with price, availability and ratings so search engines can understand them and may show richer results. Use breadcrumb and organisation markup too. Validate with Google’s Rich Results Test. See our technical SEO checklist for more.
6. Be fast on mobile
Most shoppers use phones, and slow stores lose sales. Compress images, avoid heavy scripts and reserve space for images to avoid layout jumps. Read our Core Web Vitals guide.
7. Handle e-commerce technical traps
- Out-of-stock products: keep the page if the product returns; redirect or explain if it is gone for good.
- Faceted filters: prevent thousands of near-duplicate URLs from being indexed.
- Duplicate content: use canonical tags for variants.
- Pagination: make sure products on later pages remain reachable.
- HTTPS and a sitemap, submitted in Google Search Console.
8. Create helpful content
Guides and comparisons attract shoppers earlier in their journey: “How to choose a kurta size”, “Best gifts under ₹1000”, “How to care for silk”. Link from these to your products. Write for people, not for search engines — follow Google’s helpful-content guidance.
9. Earn trust and links
Reviews, clear policies, real contact details and mentions from other websites all help. Partner with bloggers, local directories and suppliers for genuine links.
10. Measure what matters
Track organic visitors, which pages bring orders, conversion rate and revenue from search. Improve pages that get impressions but few clicks.
